This crispy chili tofu is seasoned with a delicious spice rub, crisp on the edges while soft on the inside. Popular with kids and adults and an easy vegan recipe.
MAIN INGREDIENTS
Tofu – 1 (16oz) block of Extra firm Tofu, pressed for 20 mins and then cut into 1/2 to 1 inch pieces
Flour – 2 tbsp Gram flour / Besan / Chickpea flour
Spices – Chili powder or cayenne pepper, cumin powder
Lemon juice – 1 tbsp of lemon juice
Vinegar – 1 tsp of Vinegar
HERE ARE MY STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS WITH PHOTOS
STEP 1 : Preparation
- Press tofu at least for 20 mins, using either tofu presser or by setting a heavy pan on top of it, letting the moisture drain.
- When finished, cut tofu into 1/2 to 1 inch bite-sized blocks and transfer to a bowl.
STEP 2 : Tofu Marination
To the tofu, add chili powder, cumin powder, salt, lemon juice, vinegar and give a good mix.
STEP 3 :
Now sprinkle gram flour/ chickpea flour and toss well.
STEP 4 :
Add 2 tbsp of water, few drops of red food color (optional) gently mix and make sure all pieces are coated evenly.
STEP 5 :
- Grease the tray with oil, assemble the tofu pieces in single layer with little space in between.
- Again spray oil on top of the pieces.
STEP 6 :
- Preheat your air fryer to 375*F, place the food tray in the middle rack, air fry at 375*F for 12 mins, flip or shake halfway until tofu pieces are crisp.
- Repeat this process for remaining tofu pieces. You can also add fresh whole green chilies to the tray and cook along with the tofu pieces.
STEP 7 : Serving
Serve this delicious Crispy chili tofu hot with some pickled onions, curry leaves and lemon wedges.
TIPS AND TRICKS
To Store: This tofu is best when served the day of making. If you are going to eat later, store it in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 1 week. To reheat, pop them back in the air fryer or a pan for few minutes.
Make ahead: You can prepare the marination ahead and store in refrigerator. Just air fry them before you serve.
